BAD BOY
Client Devices
Client devices are set up to locate and lock onto Wi-Fi signals from hotspot access points and connect through them to the internet. Client devices generally receive their IP address from a hotspot. Bitstorm offers two models:
![]()
Designed to be installed at a location that will give maximum advantage for the
antenna. This could be at a location which may not be convenient to access easily. By having the
antenna installed for best reception, the result is the greatest range that can be achieved.
When properly installed, Xtreme is an all weather device.
![]()
Has the same power
as Xtreme but it's designed for
less permanent and more accessible installation.
This allows for portability.
Take it with you from place to place.
The Express is quick and easy to
take down and stow away out of
sight. If used in the same
location as the Xtreme,
ranges will be comparable.
When properly installed, Express is an all weather
device.
| Other differences between Xtreme and Express | ||
| Xtreme | Express | |
| Mount: | Stainless steel | Plastic |
| Attachment to rail: | Non marring black nylon clamp | Tie wrap or velcro |
| 6 dBi Antenna: | Rugged, N-type connector | Small, RP-SMA connector |
| Max wind speed: | 150+ MPH | Untested |
| LEDs (when masthead mounted):* | Can be hidden | LEDs need to be covered |
* If installed at the masthead, the
BAD BOY LEDs can be bright enough to be
confused as masthead lights by other
boats. We recommend that when mast
mounting the Xtreme, the device be
mounted so that LEDs are hidden (face
inwards toward the mast). If the Express
is masthead mounted, it should have its
LEDs covered in some weather resistant
manner.
BAD BOY Hotspot (Access Point) Devices
Hotspot devices broadcast Wi-Fi that client devices can connect to and typically provide IP address and other connection information to a client device. Bitstorm offers two models:
![]()
Provides the ability to
use your computers without the need to
be physically plug into the BAD BOY
cable. It does this by rebroadcasting
the received Wi-Fi signal throughout a
local area. It is designed to work as a
bridge to seamlessly and wirelessly connect your portable Wi-Fi equipped
computers with the BAD BOY Xtreme and Express client devices. In effect, an
Xtreme/Express combined with Unleashed form a Wi-Fi repeater. While we recommend
mounting inside where computers will be used most often, Unleashed is an all weather device.
Note: The Unleashed has been optimized to work with BAD BOY Xtreme and Express which receive Wi-Fi data that Unleashed rebroadcasts. While it is possible to use Unleashed in other systems, Bitstorm recommends the use of the Zone product (see below) and adjust its power level as required.
![]()
Provides coverage to a large areas such as docks, large back yards and entire
properties. Unlike the Unleashed product which is designed to work seamlessly
with the Xtreme or Express, the Zone can be configured to work with any available internet
source and can be set up to operate as either a bridge or a router. When
properly installed, Zone is an all weather device.
| Other differences between Unleashed and Zone | ||
| Unleashed | Zone | |
| Power Output (EIRP): | Low - 22dBm (160mW) EIRP | High - adjustable up to 36dBm (4W) EIRP |
| Antenna: | 2 dBi black 'Rubber Duck', RP-SMA | 6 dBi, white, RP-SMA |
| Application: | Small area - Boat / RV / back porch | Large area - marina, entire property |
Note:
While some of
the products appear to share the same hardware, there are differences.
Loading the wrong firmware onto a device may fail during install, or
worse, appear to install successfully but result in your device becoming
'bricked' (inoperable and unusable). If this happens, you may be required to
return your device to Bitstorm for recover, which may not be successful.
Please be aware that costs for shipping and re-installation attempts will apply.
Warranty coverage does not extend to incorrect firmware loading.
